About Jeff's Wood Designs
Welcome to my website. I have been working with wood since 1995 with a focus on combining chip carving and woodturning into my furniture pieces.
I currently teach basic and intermediate woodworking at the Woodcraft store in Leesburg, VA and chip carving at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, MA.
Most people are very familiar with woodturning and furniture making but everyone seems to say, "What is chip carving"? Let me explain...
Chip Carving
Chip carving, or Kerbschnitzen in German, describes that form of carving that incises a pattern or design directly into wood. Chip carving gets its name from the technique employed, namely, removing a series of precise, regular chips of wood to form an engraved design lower than the surface of the wood. Chip carving as we know it today originated in Europe. It was used to decorate every wooden tool, piece of furniture and utensil around the house and barn...water buckets, breadboards, spoons, milking stools, cupboards, and even the house and barn itself!
I use chip carving
to enhance my pieces without detracting from the natural
beauty of the wood grain. My chip carvings provide
a uniqueness to each piece making them truly
'one-of-a-kind'.
